Bellingham Kiwanis SoundingsNovember 17,2009A nice crowd showed up and President Jim Carney rang the bell at 12:00 followed by Barbara Audley leading us singing Our Country T's of Thee. Bob MacIsaac provided a nice invocation. GUESTS:Bill Audley - humble servant of Sudden Valley Kiwanis, Danielle Paskewitz - guest of Jim Carney, Rose Kawcynski - guest of John Eagon, Joan Dow - introduced by Russ Westin, and Judy Sykes - quest of Emily Citron, also Past President of Kulshan Kiwanis. BIRTHDAYS:Ralph Gardner dug up $10 for all members who have tickets to the Winter Olympics in B. C. to sing to him. Responding were Bob Gregory and Chelsea Roy. What a duo! Dick Schmitt paid $2 saying once he asked Ken Nuckolls to sing to him and would never do that again. He then asked for all new members and guests to sing happy birthday to "Richard". Bob Gregory paid $2 for all to sing to him "out of tune". It was also "out of time" - horrible! ANNOUNCEMENTS:Barbara Audley invited all members to attend the 11-18-09 Board Meeting at Round Table Pizza. Rich Emerson advised People's Bank has donated $1,000 to the Agape House Children's Playground project. Also, by year's end, all members are being sent a solicitation letter regarding donations to our club Foundation. It is a tax deductible donation; please make your checks to Bellingham Kiwanis Foundation. John Howe asked members to attend the Interclub with the Kulshan Kiwanis Club at 7:15, Thursday, 11-19-09. Our goal is for all members to attend at least I Interclub by October 1, 2010. Jan Armstrong advised we ring the Salvation Army bells on Saturday, 12-5-09. There are only 2 slots left! Bruce Jorgensen asked members if they have Kiwanis identity clothes it's good to wear them. Elizabeth Bennett advised there was a Division 19 meeting on 11-16-09 and it was agreed that all clubs should not only work to increase their membership but they should also support other club's membership growth. Ralph Gardner pleaded for an Assistant Banker for Bingo at the Elks on 11-24-09. Thanks to Chelsea Roy for volunteering! Jim Carney has emailed our members advising the rare opportunity meet our new International President, Paul Palazzolo who will be visiting Portland, Or and Victoria, B. C. this next weekend. HAPPY DOLLARSJohn Wilson had a call from former member Ted DeWitt who said he wanted to pay a "shock $" after reading John Eagon gave back the $5 he won last week. John said he will probably never see Ted's buck. Will Ted and John ever decide who is the tightest? John Howe had a Happy $ having seen John Wilson officiating at a kids basketball game. Bruce Jorgensen had a Happy $ for the smiling faces at the Boys & Girls Club breakfast and his thanks to our new member Ronda Shaffer. Rhonda Shaffer paid a Happy Buck for our members who attended the Boy's & Girls Club breakfast. They are John Wilson, Bruce Jorgesen, Jim Carney and Mike Yeend. Barbara Audley had a Happy Dollar for being here after the high winds closed both roads to Sudden Valley. Rich Emerson was $1 Happy to see Joan Dow here today and hoped she will continue working for conservative causes. John Eagon dug up a Sad $ and said "yes, it is a real one". He said he was harassed when he wasn't even at the Kulshan Club meeting last week. Al Dale gave a Happy$1 as he was impressed by the young women and others who attended the Veterans Memorial Park ceremony last week during Veterans Day. Al's next $1 was in praise of Bill Audley' Ham Radio expertise being better than Al's. Bob Gregory then gave a $1 to say that he is also a Ham, but that he can't be cured!Guest Joan Dow tossed in Happy Buck saying that Rich Emerson did a great job chairing the Bill Mize forum last August. DRAWING:Barbara Audley had the 5 of Spades but not the Joker. The pot is over $500 for next week and only a few cards are left. PROGRAM:Ralph Gardner introduced Dr. Gary Goldfogel, Whatcom County Medical Examiner for the past 21 years. Gary outlined the differences between a Coroner and a Medical Examiner. Coroners do not have to have a M. D. designation and must call in an M. D. for autopsies. Following High School, Dr. Goldfogel had 15 years of training to be qualified as a Forensic Pathologist, one of 381 in the U. S. He investigates all unnatural deaths in Whatcom County with about 160 autopsies performed annually. A very interesting program. Next week's speaker is Byron Mannering, executive director of Brigid Collins House, who will explain the importance of that organization and update us on its activities. Our club was instrumental in establishing the very successful, annual Brigid Collins fundraising auction and two of our members, Alyson and Doug Bestle, are still very active in that endeavor. See you Tuesday! |
