Bellingham Kiwanis Soundings

November 3,2009

President Jim Carney rang the bell for a good crowd promptly at 12:00 noon. Lyla led us in "My Country T'is of Thee followed by the Pledge to America. Elizabeth Bennett gave the Invocation that included a hint that our country needs help. Dick Zagelow asked if that was our program or something like that.

Guests:

Bill Audley, Joyce Gardner and our prospective member Ronda Shaffer were welcomed.

Announcements:

Jim asked the Board Members to meet for a few minutes after the meeting.

Jim reminded us, the Executive Board meets next Wednesday at the Roundtable Pizza, Sunset Square.

Lyla was the Secret Hand shaker this week; several members missed her and came up with the 25 cent fine. Due to the minimizing exposure to the flu it was suggested that we substitute a simple "fist to fist" greeting in the future. If you are really concerned use an "elbow to elbow" greeting!

The Nancy Leavitt Baby Contest results were announced by Lyla. Gwyneth Ruth Leavitt was born at 8:00 AM on Sunday, October 29th. Congratulations Nancy! Dick Zagelow had the only money on that date so he wins the gift certificate!

Dick Schmitt announced a few 2009/2010 Club Rosters are still available if you don't have one.

Interclub Committee:

John Howe advised of the following Interclub's

  • Nov 19th Thursday, Kulshan Club, 7:15 AM at Bellingham Golf & Country Club
  • Nov. 12th Thursday Tsawassen, B. C. Dinner meeting
  • Nov. 9th Monday Division 18 Council Meeting, Bob's Burgers & Brew, Sudden Valley
  • Community Services Committee: Marty Stauffer will email the Committee details for the next Meeting date of Thursday, Nov. 5th. SIGN Program:

Being the 2nd Tuesday, Emily Citron passed the jar for contributions hoping to raise $100 this week. Emily announced that a firm called Accumed has pledged up to $100,000 to match Kiwanis contributions in support of the Philippines earthquake victims and the SIGN team there.

    HAPPY DOLLARS

Marty gave $1 being happy for the fun and dry Halloween. Enjoy the candy Marty!!

Russ gave a $1 that he was happy John Wilson has lots of bucks! Another $1 for a happy return from Montana with an ice chest full of moose and halibut. Russ was accused of shooting the Halibut and trapping the Moose.

    Then the True Confessions began - - - -

Vaughn gave a mixed $1, saying, "Just when things were going well with his sons dating" - - - Oops, Vaughn is going to be a Grandfather.

Dick Z. then put up a buck saying something about marrying his daughter being "stuffed in a white dress". Hey guys, don't you know, the first one can come anytime!

John Wilson then said "here's a $1 for not being a grandfather"

Mike Y. gave $1 saying he was scared to get up!! His oldest son just sent off for college applications.

John H. gave a buck for the 15 carloads of kids delivered to his neighborhood on Halloween night. John passed out 130 pieces of candy to the little folks. Another sad buck was paid to advise how hard John and Ralph had to work dealing with a game reading 5 Bingos at Tuesdays Elks Bingo.

Greg paid $1 to advise he was doing committee work at the Bellingham Rotarian Wine Tasting event recently. Mike Y. was also there. Ah, such dedication to Kiwanis!

    Drawing:

Greg drew an Ace trying to win the $480 Pot but the Joker eluded him. He put the $5 back toward the Admin. Fund. Next week the Pot grows to $500. Anyone interested?

    Program:

Dr. Don Easterbrook presented a very factual, scientific program about weather entitled "What is happening with Global Warming?"

He announced that he hates (jokingly) Democrats and Republicans and puts politics aside, simply wanting to deal with the scientific data on weather. Many slides were presented illustrating weather patterns back ages ago along with data about how Sunspots appear in correlation with climate and the temperature of oceans. His conclusions are that our temperatures are not any warmer since 1999; it is now becoming cooler since 2007. The computer model projections on Global Warming have been wrong. If Cap and Trade legislation is passed it will mean the taxpayers will suffer and those investing in carbon exchanges will benefit hugely.

Next week's program: Vaughn Hagen's father will present a program form an organization he volunteers with. Lunch for up to 32 of our members will be paid by his organization!
