Bellingham Kiwanis SoundingsSeptember 8, 2009President Rich got everyone's attention when he put the mallet to the bell at 12:00 noon. Lyla led us with My Country Tis of Thee and Jim gave the Invocation. Guests:Brett Williams and Sandy Bruner
Annoucements:Prez Rich noted that it was great seeing the article about Lyla's trip to Gambia in the Bellingham Herald. Lyla T thanked Nancy L for submitting the story, which highlighted our Sign's program.
Emily C sent around a jar for collecting funds that would be matched by Hagen's Grocery and used to provide school supplies to students who could not otherwise afford them. She also sent around a sign-up for committees.
Jim C requested that the committee chairs email him their budgets and goals.
Bruce reported that the bike rodeo was this Saturday and that setup starts at 7am. Park Cleanup is scheduled the following week, Saturday September 18th. Start time will be 9:00am and the project will be completed by noon.
Ralph reported that this years NWWF Bingo remains one of our best fund raisers. He calculated our earnings per member hour of service. We each earned $19.00 per hours. Very good effort.
Nancy Larsen introduced Sandy Bruner, and presented Sandy with a check for $500.00 to go to Whatcom County Center for Early Learning. The center provides family centered training for children who are developmentally disadvantaged. They use a coaching method that focuses on the specific needs of each child. They are looking for board members at this time. If you are interested in serving, contact Sandy at the Whatcom County Center for Early Learning.
Birthdays:Bob Daws announced that he was &OLD MAN& (89 years young). The entire group sang Happy Birthday.
Humor:Prez Rich got it right this time. Medical Definitions - lots of good stuff. Hey its worth attending just to hear Prez Rich.
Happy Dollars:Al celebrated his 61rst wedding anniversary on Sunday by traveling to Vancouver BC.
Ralph was happy to have spent 5 days in Montana following the path of Lewis can Clark.
Barb reported on her Whistler trip and they whipped out a great joke that got an applause.
Vaughn was happy to have represented our club, along with John Wilson, Jim Carney and Andy Jackson, in the Kulshan Kiwanis golf tournament. They had not yet heard who won, but with Andy along - all had a hoot.
John W noted that this was his kids first day back in school. He went on and the thanked Anita for letter Andy play in the golf tournament, Jim Carney for being able to play in the clinch, and Vaughn, who can really play golf.
Jim C recited the Third Object of Kiwanis: Promote high social and business standards.
Drawing:John Wilson won the drawing but missed the joker.
Program:John Wilson introduced our member Hans Erchinger-Davis presented the film he produced following totem poles created by the Lummi's commemorating 9/11 from their carving to their presentation in New York, Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon. The film was made during the trip to the Pentagon.
The film has received much acclaim, and a copy of the film is at the Smithsonian.
