Bike Rodeo Winner Presented a Bike ( Click to see Photo Album)

July 21, 2007: The Kiwanis Club of Bellinghan, along with the Bellingham Police Department, Whatcom County Sheriff's Department, and Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse, presented a Bicycle Safety Rodeo for local young riders. All riders were fitted with helmets, given instruction in hand signals, proper riding clothing, and many other safety issues outlined in the written material sent home with parents. Sixty six riders went through the courses designed to test and improve the riding skills necessary to avoid the five greatest deadly mistakes of young biker riders.

Nineteen of the 45 members of the Kiwanis Club of Bellingham participated in this public service event. Five family members related to Kiwanis members attended the rodeo and helped with this hand-on project to save local children from serious injury or death on neighborhood streets. Additionally, five friends of club members were there to help. A special thanks goes out to the two friends of the Lake Whatcom Kiwanis Club (Marlene and Russ Harlan)who were referred for help by Lake Whatcom President Bill Audley.

Special donors who helped make this project possible were Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse, St. Joseph's Cardiology Center, WAL-MART, Sound Images, Fairhaven Bike and Mountain Sport, Safety Sign Inc., The HUB Community Bicycle Co-op, Merrill Lynch, Frontier Bank at Barkley Village, Vaughn S. Hagen, CPA, Wilson Home Furnishings, and Jorgensen Family Chiropractic.

A special thankyou goes out to Bellingham Police Crime Prevention Officers Mark Young and Tara Fleetwood for their exceptional work organizing all the components of the Fourth Annual Crime prevention and Safety Fair, and for including the Kiwanis Club of Bellingham in their event.

    YCPO Clean-up BTC Children Center

Bruce Jorgensen, Cyndy Patzman and Emily Citron

The Young Children Priority One committee annually spear-heads a project for the Bellingham Technical College. We do an annual spring clean up of the play yard for the Parenting Class building. This program gives classes in parenting to low income single parents and couples who desire to learn more about the complicated issues of bringing up children. The committee also gives scholarships to those parents who cannot afford the cost of the classes.

The work we do in the play yard consists of weeding, trimming, power washing, laying beauty bark and gravel and any other chore that is needed. Helping this year was Bruce Jorgensen, Hans and Janet Erchinger-Davis (and their puppy), Emily Citron, Vaughn Hagen, Alyson Batchelder-Bestle, Nancy Larsen and former member Cyndy Patzman. It took this efficient group only 2 hours to whip the site into shape!

Thirteen Kiwanians helped on Saturday (21st ) to finish up some of the jobs that were started on the 7th at the Salvation Army Camp. Alyson Batchelder-Bestle made a whole lot of wood and wood chips disappear. Not only did she help feed the raw material into the chipper, she spent many hours hauling the chips off to their destinations on some of the paths. Bill and Barbara Audley worked to spiffy up the fire pit and benches. A lot of trimming, painting and curtain hanging was completed too. About 4 Circle K'ers were there to help as well as Don Treat from Kulshan who had his weed eater smoking. Secretary Emily will be totaling the hours from both of the days of this project to share with us and Kiwanis International.

    KIWANIS VOLUNTEERS GO TO CAMP!

April 7th - One Day World Wide Kiwanis Project.

Bruce Jorgensen places Kiwanis Placque onto Bunk House built by The Bellingham Kiwanis in 1976. The Kiwanis then repainted the exterior in 1997 and the interior this year.

Members of the Bellingham, Kulshan, Lake Whatcom and Ferndale Kiwanis clubs and members of the WWU Circle K club and the Squalicum Key Club spent Saturday working at the Salvation Army Camp Lummi. Among the projects performed by the 54 member team were clearing brush, cleaning trails, building playground equipment, cleaning the bathrooms, painting bunk houses, sheetrock and taping of the nurses quarters, building benches and hanging a basketball hoop. The project was chaired by Bruce Jorgensen.

  • Family Members and Guests: Edie Jorgensen, George Kolakowski, (there were 5 members from the Salvation Army, which I could not read the names), Andy Jackson, Gary Armstrong, and Shelly Armstrong

Kiwanians from Bellingham, Kulshan, Lake Whatcom and Ferndale clubs worked hard for most of the day….some late into the afternoon. Everyone helped with advertising by putting out flyers in their offices, businesses and neighborhoods. Nancy Larsen, Audrey Schwartz, and Elizabeth Bennett made curtains for the cafeteria and boys and girls cabins. Nancy did publicity and actually got articles in the Bellingham Herald twice and once in the Business Journal. Larry West locked himself in the nurse's station and finished up the drywall as well as did the painting. He had lots of help from Bill Audley and Ham Hayes. Emily Citron, Bob Olson managed the sign-in desk, dispersed a Band-Aid and helped with some shed clean up and doing odd jobs like painting garbage cans. Dick Zagelow also helped out with the shed clean up which involved removing everything and putting most of it back. Lots went to the dump. Dick Zagelow ate two meat patties at lunch…..huh?

Russ Weston and Doug Davidson built a deck off the bathhouse. Bill and Barbara Audley and Pamela Cushing built some benches for sitting around the campfire (I hope I got that right!). Dick Eddy from Ferndale and someone else (?) worked diligently for 6 plus hours putting Part A with Part B on a piece of play ground equipment. They still have to finish it up. Paul Spinelli and the crew from Kulshan, spent the day cleaning off the front deck of the kitchen and the roofs of all the buildings. John Wilson, Audrey Schwartz (LW Club), Rich Emerson and Elizabeth Bennett painted the girls cabin a cheery bright yellow with white trim. Nancy Larsen and husband George Kolakowski spent their time on re-screening all of the windows on the 2 cabins….up the ladder…down the ladder…up the ladder…..

Anita and Andy Jackson painted the counselors room in the boys cabin. . Bill Audley and Gary Armstrong were seen wielding chain saws and were cutting down brush and small trees. Edie Jorgensen (Bruce's hard working sister), spent most of the day at the Chipper (brought by Russ Weston). Alyson Batchelder Bestle kept supplying her with tree limbs to grind. Boy…their ears must have been ringing after that! Colin Hardman from Circle K and someone else spent the day weed eating around the camp.

Lyla Tjoelker and Jan Armstrong were hiding in the cafeteria, preparing lunch for the hungry crew. It was a challenge for many reasons, but the most important reason was because for a good part of the morning they didn't have any water! Then the water they did get was ice cold. There was lots and lots of food, including Jan's famous bean soup. (Recipes' for the soup were later sold for $2.00.) A lot of the food ended up going to the Salvation Army to help them feed needy people.

This is not the first time Kiwanis has helped the Salvation Army's Lummi Camp. Years ago, members of the Bellingham Kiwanis built the two overnight camp buildings. (Dick Schmitt served on that project.) Around 1997, the Bellingham Kiwanis put together a huge work party and painted all of the building.

Over one million Kiwanis community service hours in one day is the goal! The Bellingham, Lake Whatcom, Kulshan and Ferndale Kiwanis clubs along with help from the WWU Circle K and area Key Club's will due our share.

Each year, the Salvation Army runs four one week summer camps servicing disadvantaged children in Whatcom County. Each sessions provides the campers with sports, recreation, crafts and spiritual activities. Call or email Bruce Jorgensen and sign-up for this great event.

Great Weather, Great Job Accomplished, Great Picnic!
